Headphones are used for many metal detectors as the source of sound. Boosters and speakers are also used,  with some detectors having inbuilt speakers as an alternative sound source to the use of headphones. The BOOTY range of boosters is available here in a few differing configurations, as is the SP01 Steelphase unit.
